Recent reports bring to front the idea of an upcoming BMW 8 Series Coupe. BMW insiders told Automotive News that the company is weighing a return to the high-end coupe segment, in which Mercedes offers the S-class-based CL. “We want to send out the message the future is not all about electric cars but also traditional models with real emotional appeal,” said a BMW source.
Furthermore, other BMW sources hint that the BMW Pininfarina Gran Lusso Coupe revealed at the 2013 Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is a conceptual version of the future 8 Series. The spacious and bigger coupe than BMW’s current 6 series is the first project the Italian design house Pininfarina has done with BMW.
To add even more fuel to the fire, the lengthy press release for the 4 Series Coupe made a reference to the 8 Series Coupe. “At the same time, as a true BMW Coupe, the new nomenclature brings the new BMW 4 Series Coupe in line with the larger 6 Series and 8 Series Coupes,” mentioned the press release.
While we would love to believe that BMW is playing teasers with us, we’re more inclined to believe that the reference was made in regards to the BMW 850Ci and 850CSi models built from 1989 to 1999. It remains to be seen if BMW will invest its resources into the growing full-size luxury coupes segment where the Mercedes-Benz CL-Class and Maseratti GranTurismo are getting the most attention.
