RM Sotheby’s upcoming auction in New York City will host a sale of high-end cars, including the famed BMW 507 Roadster.
The BMW 507 is not only one of BMW’s best looking car of all time, but one of the best overall looking cars of all time. It’s simply gorgeous and timeless. Powered by a 3.2 liter V8, that developed 148 hp, mated to a four-speed manual, the BMW 507 was one of the coolest cars of its time.
Unfortunately, the BMW 507 was too expensive to make and too expensive to buy, so it didn’t last very long and almost bankrupt BMW. It also didn’t sell very well and only a handful of very wealthy people bought them. Elvis Presley famously owned one that’s being restored by BMW.
The 1959 example that RM Sotheby’s will offer is a Series II car with a slightly larger engine displacement and a revised cockpit. The car belongs to Shane O’Neil of RKO General, Inc, the grandson of the founder of RKO Pictures studio and it was restored once in the late 1980s. The auction listing says the car has the original colors, but not the original engine. An unnumbered but factory-correct replacement engine was put in place.
