The BMW i8 is becoming ever so popular. These days, even the up-beat New Yorkers are opting in for the hybrid supercar from Bavaria, as well as residents of other world famous cities. Unusually so, the high-profile establishment of much of the North American and European cities are welcoming the eco-friendly change. Making the switch from the usual suspects of Italian and/or German supercars – namely the Lamborghini Aventador, ferrari 488 GTB, Mercedes-AMG GT-S and Porsche 911 for example – works.
Yes, the i8 can’t directly compete with the likes of the Aventador or the 488 in terms of sheer power and performance. However, it brings their owners the futuristic looks, it emphasizes fuel efficiency and it’s easy on the environment – drawing plenty of customers to it.
The BMW i8 runs on a hybrid system. It consists of a turbocharged three-cylinder BMW TwinPower Turbo petrol engine and BMW eDrive technology in the form of an electric drive system. The 1.5-liter combustion engine develops 170 kW/231 hp and drives the rear wheels of the BMW i8, while the 96 kW/131 hp electric drive sends its power to the front wheels and allows an all-electric range of up to 35 kilometers (22 miles) and a top speed of 120 km/h (75 mph).
With this powerplant and transmission system in place it will do the 0-62mph (0-100km/h) run in less than 4.2 seconds. Overall, the BMW i8 has a designed range of up to 330mil (around 530 kilometers).
