While driving impressions have been embargoed for a little while, we were able to recently test the brand-new F90-generation BMW M5 and BMW i3s on track in Portugal (reviews coming soon!). That’s a bit odd of a pairing, isn’t it? One of the cars is a bonafide super sedan with more power than a Ferrari 458 Italia and the other is a tiny electric hatchback with about the same power as a Volkswagen Golf. So not exactly the most typical car pairing for the track.
However, both cars were on the same track in Lisbon recently and we have some pictures of the event. The juxtaposition of both cars on the same track is rather fun. The new F90-gen BMW M5 packs 600 hp from its twin-turbocharged 4.4 liter V8 and utilizes all four wheels. That allows it to get from 0-60 mph in about 3.3 seconds, making it the fastest accelerating BMW ever made. The BMW i3s? Well, that uses a 184 hp electric motor that powers its rear wheels. It can get from 0-60 mph in 6.8 seconds. So it’s no M5.
Despite the stark difference in power and performance, these are two really fun cars to have on the track. Just in very different ways. They also looks really funny with each other. While the M5 looks low, lean and mean, the BMW i3 is taller, boxier and plat-out funkier. The BMW i3 looks like what everyone will be driving in the future, while the M5 looks like a mean, angry performance machine.
It’s a bit of an odd pairing, though, and we’re happy have experience doth. Wait for out full review coming soon.
