Earlier this week we got to see a first glimpse of BMW’s future Formula E car thanks to a very short and very dark teaser published on Youtube. Back then BMW said it will be unveiling the full thing on September 14 and we set our alarms to ring on Friday, in anticipation of seeing the so-called iFE.18 car. Today the Germans released some more info, offering a time and a place for the event: 19:30 CEST at the BMW Welt museum in Munich.
If you happen in to be in the area on Friday, make sure you stop by as there are some interesting activities planned for the launch. As of 19:30 CEST, you can experience the future at first hand, and see the all-electric racing car up close and personal in BMW Welt. And the two BMW works drivers contesting Season 5 of the ABB FIA Formula E Championship will be on site to sign autographs.
Another premiere awaits you in the evening hours. The BMW iFE.18 will contest its first race – virtually. The race car will do some laps on the late-night streets of Munich at 22:00 CEST via motion mapping technology – before embarking on its world tour which will have it visit 7 countries across 3 continents. The spectacular motion mapping campaign will also fascinate people in Oslo (17/9), London (20/9), New York (24/9), Detroit (26/9), Mexico City (29/9) and Hong Kong (4/10) in the weeks after the official launch.
The heart of the BMW iFE.18 is the innovative powertrain, which is hidden deep inside the single-seater car. It was developed using the expertise of the same engineers who also designed the drive for the BMW i3. BMW i and BMW Motorsport are working on the Formula E project in tandem, thereby facilitating a technology transfer between series development and motorsport unprecedented in this form. The BMW iFE.18’s first real race is scheduled for 15th December 2018 in Diriyah.
