The BMW E92 M3 might’ve been retired a while back but it still holds a special place in the hearts of BMW enthusiasts. There are plenty of reasons why that’s deserved and this particular M3 generation might become a collector’s item in the future due to the fact that it’s the last of the M3 Coupe models ever made, and it’s the only generation endowed with a V8 under the hood. That makes it an interesting combination and the guys from The Smoking Tire just took one out for a test to see why it holds a special place in our hearts.
When the new F80 M3 came out, many complained about a lot of things. Moving from a naturally aspirated engine to a turbocharged one was probably at the top of the list. The S65 engine of the E92 M3 was also a jewel, one derived from the legendary F1-infused S85 V10 with a sound that make you listen from the get go. It revved into oblivion and raised the bar rather high for anything that would follow.
Then there’s the hydraulic steering that was simply retired when the current M3 came out, yet another disappointment for enthusiasts worldwide. Therefore, one could argue that the E92 M3 was the last analogue M car and they’d be right. The guys in the video say this exact same thing and they also point out that the power and especially torque figure might not seem too impressive but it is enough to get your adrenaline shots.
Furthermore, the way the M3 is set up allows you to actually use a lot of the car without being afraid of going overboard and ending up hurting yourself or someone else. The smooth power delivery and precise handling make it a thoroughly enjoyable car even in stock form. Therefore, if you do decide to buy one you can actually enjoy it not just consider it a long-term investment.
