The first-generation of MINI John Cooper Works GP was actually absurdly named the “MINI Cooper S with John Cooper Works GP Kit” because why not name a car with a paragraph? It was introduced in 2006 and it wasn’t much more than a stiffer suspension and some cool aero. Then, MINI introduced another in 2012 and gave it a much more appropriate name, the MINI John Cooper Works GP and it was much more extreme and hardcore. Fans loved it for its raucous nature and awesome looks. Those same fans should get excited now, as the famed British brand is making another one.
While there’s no official information on the new MINI John Cooper Works GP, we have been made aware that it’s been officially confirmed. So there absolutely will be a new MINI JCW GP and it should be the best one yet.
What will this new car be like? Well, we can take a look at the past to gather a guess. The previous-gen MINI John Cooper Works GP took a Cooper S and cranked it up to 15. So it got manually-adjustable coilovers, an entirely redesigned suspension, new spring rates, thicker anti-roll bars, bigger brakes with six-piston calipers, more aero and slightly more power. So it was a track-ready, pocket rocket of a car.
Again, nothing has been confirmed by MINI just yet. The only official confirmation we have is that this car will, in fact, exist. When will it exist? We’re not sure but we’re expecting it to debut next year, as we’ve been told that official info will be released in the first quarter of 2019. I know that’s sort of vague but it’s the most we’ve been given, so it’s all we can tell you. So expect a new MINI John Cooper Works GP next year and expect it to be even more hardcore than before.
