Alongside its X3 M sibling, the BMW X4 M Competition was also on hand at the 2019 Shanghai Auto Show. Just like with its near-identical twin, this is the first time many enthusiasts are seeming the X4 M in person. From the B-pillar forward, it looks basically identical to the X3 M but move rearward from there and things get a bit different
Its roofline tapers far more aggressively toward the back, obviously, thus creating a sort of “coupe” effect. Admittedly, it looks more like an X3 M with a mullet but it does look a bit sportier than the X3. It’s also a bit more interesting to look at. Some enthusiasts love its funky looks, some hate them. Either way, though, it’s certainly an eye-catching car and one that will turn heads.
You do sacrifice rear passenger headroom and trunk space, though. Which is likely not going to go over well in China, as customers there value back seat space above all else. So BMW likely isn’t going to kill it with the X4 M Competition. That’s the price you have to pay for style, though.
We’ve seen the BMW X4 M Competition in person before, just as well as the X3 M, and it looks good. Its extra aggression makes its oddball styling make a bit more sense. The black accents, M-style mirrors and lowered ride height actually make it look as sporty as BMW claims it is. Though, it must be said that its roof spoiler isn’t as good looking as the one featured on the BMW X3 M.
Under the hood, the BMW X4 M Competition will get a 503 hp version of the 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged I6 (S58) found in the standard car. That puts it right in line with the Mercedes-AMG GLC63 S Coupe and Alfa Romeo Giulia Quadrifoglio. We can’t wait to drive it, especially after having driven the Alfa, to find out how it stacks up.
