The guys from Carwow are bringing us a rather curious drag race, to be honest. They are doing a diesel drag race and chose three cars that have almost nothing in common for this purpose. There’s the BMW 840d xDrive going up against the Coupe version of the Mercedes-Benz E400d and the Audi A8 50 TDI. To some extent, maybe, just maybe, the 8 Series could be compared to the E-Class Coupe but what is the Audi A8 doing here?
Well, I think the guys just wanted to compare engines and had to just go along with what they had at their disposal for such purposes. Therefore, since all cars have 3-liter diesel engines, this could be considered a ‘comparison’. The only problem is, since all cars play in a different league, they have seriously different weights to carry and thus, the end results of this three-way comparison might be surprising.
So, the BMW 840d comes with a 3-liter straight six diesel engine with 320 HP and 680 Nm (501 lb-ft) of torque. It also has xDrive and launch control, which should help it out in the race. The Mercedes-Benz E400d has a similar 3-liter straight six under the hood but develops 340 HP and 700 Nm (516 lb-ft) of torque. It also has all-wheel drive, just to keep things interesting. Lastly, the Audi A8 50 TDI comes with a V6 3-liter mill pushing out just 286 HP. It is also the heaviest of the bunch.
As for the weight factor, the E-Class was the lightest here tipping the scale at around 1,850 kg, the BMW came second with 1,910 kg while the Audi is the heaviest, given that it is a full-size limousine, after all. In the drag race though, the Audi did brilliantly and the same could be said about the braking test, where it actually managed to post the shortest distance. Check it out.
