The BMW 8 Series range is made up of the 840d and M850i right now, with the 840i soon to follow. The US market however, won’t get the 840d which is a shame, honestly, because it seems like the best pick in the range to some. The video below seems to back that idea as well, as it shows incredible performance from the 3-liter twin-turbo diesel engine under the hood of the aforementioned model.
The guys from AutoTopNL are the ones who provide the footage and they used a GPS system to record the performance. As you’re about to see, it confirms the performance claimed by BMW for the car to the millisecond. The 0-100 km/h (62 mph) sprint is claimed by the Germans to take place in 4.9 seconds which is amazing for a car this heavy and fitted with a diesel mill. The app shows 4.91 seconds and that’s pretty damn spot on.
Then there’s the 0-200 km/h (124 mph) sprint that’s not to be overlooked either. It takes the 840d just 21 seconds to reach that eye-watering speed and that’s also pretty damn impressive. The car is electronically limited to a top speed of 250 km/h (155 mph) as per the ‘gentlemen’s agreement’ German companies abide to. To be honest, that’s too much anyway, as you won’t really reach that velocity without breaking the law on most roads around the world.
Chip in the fact that the 840d is quite frugal as well, and you start to see how much sense it actually makes. Some would say the diesel sound is nothing to be proud of but the B57 engine is so well balanced it muffled that it doesn’t really bother anyone. With the Active Sound Design system you get a decent soundtrack inside as well. So, what’s there not to like?
