After seeing the BMW Concept 4 at the 2019 Frankfurt Motor Show, we now know that the next-generation 4 Series will get some very large Kidney Grilles. That funky design will also make its way to the upcoming BMW M4, just with more aggressive body work to go along with it. A couple of new spy photos have just surfaced that may show the upcoming M4 Convertible doing some testing. (We don’t own the photos but they can be seen here)
These photos come from Car Magazine but there are only two of them; one from the front and one from the back. From the front, this test mule is almost identical to the standard 4 Series Convertible models we’ve seen in the past. Because most of the front end is covered in camouflage and the side mirrors are regular 4 Series-spec, this test mule’s identity is hard to determine. Though, we think it’s a BMW M4 Convertible.
From the back, we can clearly see quad exhaust pipes. Those quad pipes are clear indicators of the car’s M Division DNA, as they’re a BMW M staple. The wheels also seem rather large and sporty, which would indicate larger brakes sitting behind them. This is clearly an early test mule, as those are the only indicators of this being a BMW M4.
If it is a BMW M4 Convertible, it’s powered by the same 3.0 liter twin-turbocharged I6 engine as the upcoming M3. In standard-spec, it will make 473 hp and in Competition-spec it will make 503 hp. So it should be properly quick. What will be interesting to see is whether or not the BMW M4 Convertible gets the same base rear-wheel drive model with a six-speed manual option as the M3 will. Being that convertibles sell in such small numbers, it’s possible that it will only come in all-wheel drive, automatic, Competition-spec.
