Today, at the 2014 LA Auto Show, the new BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M were introduced to the public. Still considered a niche product in the high-performance SUV market, the two M-brothers aim to set the bar higher for BMW in terms of sales and showcase that a heavyweight M car can still be fun on the road and on the track.
BMW says that over 10,000 kilometers were clocked around the Nurburgring with the two cars delivering performance equal or better with the E92 M3.
BMW X6 M project manager, Herbert Bayerl, said the 2,275 kg high-performance SUV can match the significantly lighter E92 M3 and its 1,700 kilos. The predecessor E71 BMW X6 M ran the Nürburgring-Nordschleife in 8:24 minutes while the E92 M3 clocked in at 8:04 minutes – that will put the new F86 X6 M at 20 seconds faster the previous generation.
The two all-wheel drive Ms benefit from an updated V8 TwinTurbo engine delivering more horsepower and torque, as well as from a tuned up chassis, better and bigger brakes, and Michelin tires to match the performance of the car.
Design wise, the 2015 BMW X5 M and BMW X6 M stand out with their aggressive styling, the recognizable large air intakes and sporty bumper, and now the side functional vents. In the back, the twin tailpipes remind us this is a powerful SUV and that it delivers an impressive sound as well.
Inside the car, the typical M design is present and compared to the previous generation, it is not only sportier but also more luxurious. One particular thing that stands out are the M seats that remind us this is more race car than it looks from the outside.
The 2015 BMW X5 M will be offered at a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price of $99,650 and the 2015 BMW X6 M will start at $103,050, including $950 Destination and Handling.
