2014 has been a record year for BMW in terms of sales. The company has just announced today that it surpassed 2 million cars sold in 2014, including MINI and Rolls Royce vehicles.

Deep down in the press release, BMW also revealed the number of BMW i vehicles sold last year: 17,800. BMW says that 16,052 global customers picked up the innovative BMW i3 electric vehicle, while 1,741 lucky customers are now enjoying the high-tech hybrid sports car, i8.

BMW also mentions that nearly three-quarters of those i3 sales occurred in the second half of the year, while the i8 only went on sale in the second half of 2014.

The Munich-based automaker sees these numbers as a success for the brand and they plan to increase production in 2015.

Harald Krüger, Member of the Board of Management of BMW AG responsible for Production said, “Our production lines in Leipzig are highly flexible and we have switched more production to the i8 to reduce customer waiting times to a better level. Meanwhile, more than 100 BMW i3’s leave the plant each day. The BMW Group is the first automotive company to manufacture using significant quantities of carbon fiber in series production and the success of these cars speaks for itself.”

The U.S. is also having strong monthly sales of the i3 with inventory level being lower than ever. The BMW i3 REx remains the most purchased variant in the U.S.
