Back in 2003, Volkswagen launched the first Touran model, an elegant minivan designed for European families. At the same time, BMW was launching their first X3 SUV while actively working on the first-generation 1 Series hatchback. Twelve years later and the automotive landscape looks different. BMW is now also a provider of minivans and inevitably their new 2 Series Gran Tourer will butt heads with the VW Touran.
Our photo comparison compares the two minivans from all angles, showing the similarities and differences.
The VW Touran 2015 extends to 4.52 meters, while the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is 3 centimeters longer. Compared to the first generation, the VW Touran is 13 cm longer and offers a more spacious interior. On request, for both vehicles, a third row of seats creates the space for seven passengers.
The VW Touran offers up to 1,980 liters of luggage, while the BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer holds 1,905 liters of baggage space.
As usual in this class, both models use a front-wheel drive layout with transversely mounted engines. While 2 Series Active Tourer and Gran Tourer also use three-cylinder engines with up to 136 hp, the base Touran model starts with four-cylinder engines.
The upcoming comparison tests are likely to focus on the premium features, space and infotainment systems, rather than the driving experience. Price will also play a factor in the buying decision, with the Touran starting at about 23,000 euros and the Gran Tourer at least 28,650 euros.
