Since the time when cavemen were carving Corvettes into cave walls, enthusiasts have been swapping LS engines into seemingly everything. Name an enthusiast’s favorite car and there has been an LS-swap done with it. For those who aren’t familiar, the Chevy LS motor family is one of the most iconic engine families of all time. All of which are big V8s that can seemingly fit into any rear-wheel drive car.

While most BMW purists cringe at the idea of a Chevy V8 powering one of their favorite Bavarians, LS-swapping  BMWs is actually a very common occurrence. While there aren’t many BMW LS-swaps that tickle my fancy, personally, it’s hard not to like this one.

This specific build started out life as a BMW 540i Touring, which was powered by a 4.4 liter, 282 hp V8 that was originally mated to a five-speed automatic. So, already a pretty cool car to begin with, as it’s hard to argue with any V8-powered, rear-wheel drive wagon, especially a Bavarian one. However, that wasn’t quite enough for this owner, who decided to shoehorn in a 6.0 liter LS2 V8 (from a modern Pontiac GTO). Being that the V8 was sourced from a GTO, it’s safe to say it makes around 400 hp.

That massive V8 was then paired up with a Tremec T56 six-speed manual, one of the most commonly used manual gearboxes for builds like this. Thanks to the massive increase in power, a new differential had to be fitted, so it gets an OS limited-slip differential. It also sits on FK coilover suspension, gets bigger brakes and BBS wheels.

From the outside, it looks really good. It’s subtle and still very much an E39 5 Series Touring. But it looks a bit edgier and a bit more exciting. Still, it’s quite original. On the inside, it gets some seats from the E39 M5 and some other upgrades, such as the new shift lever.

Right now, this car is currently for sale for around $15,000. While that’s normally a lot for an E39 Touring, this is no ordinary E39 Touring. However, once must wonder how well the build was done, as swapping its engine for a Chevy V8 is a pretty tall task , so you’re going to want to make sure that everything is in good-working mechanical condition. If you can appreciate something like this, it will likely be an incredibly fun and hilarious car. If you don’t though, it’s probably marked with the sign of the devil to you.
