Land Rover wants to pit their Range Rover Velar against the BMW X4 and Porsche Macan, three premium SAVs with a coupe-like shape. The video is sponsored by Land Rover and aims to highlight some of the qualities of the Velar over the X4 and Macan. Of course, these type of branded videos are going to start some rather heated debates online but in the end, it’s the personal preference of the customer that makes the difference when deciding to buy.
And while the X4 does seem dated, especially inside, compared to the newly released Velar and the Macan does come with too many buttons on the center console, both cars are a bit old by comparison. As a matter of fact, the X4 will get a new version in the near future and the SAC wasn’t developed from the get go to be a practical choice, as the two are also compared in terms of storage space.
The newest car from Jaguar/Land Rover is also the sportiest car Land Rover has ever made. The Range Rover Velar is actually not built on a Land Rover or Range Rover platform, but Jaguar one. The Velar is built on the Jaguar F-Pace, which means it’s built with extensive uses of aluminum and lightweight materials. So it’s significantly lighter than the Range Rover Sport. This means it’s a sharper, lighter and more dynamic Range Rover.
The Velar is not cheap, though. To give the Velar enough poke to hang with the BMW X3 M40i, you have to pay $64,000. That gets you a 3.0 liter supercharged V6 with 380 hp, an eight-speed auto and a 0-60 mph time of 5.3 seconds. So while it’s a few thousand dollars more, it has a bit more power and can get to 60 mph in around the same time as the X3 M40i.
Of course, the advantages of the BMW are not even mentioned but that was to be expected. In the end, we’d be interested to see just what kind of impact these videos had on brand perception or maybe even sales.
