After driving the new BMW M5, it’s become my new reference point for speed and performance. I’ve driven a lot of fast cars, including Ferraris, McLarens and AMGs. But the BMW M5 might be the fastest thing I’ve ever sat behind the wheel of. It’s monstrous, brutal and wonderful. It’s also one of the five fastest cars Car and Driver tested this past year.
C&D recently put together a list of the five slowest and five fastest cars of 2018. Coming in as the fifth-fastest car was the new F90 BMW M5. Thanks to its 600 hp 4.4 liter twin-turbo V8 and all-wheel drive grip, the BMW M5 is capable of reaching 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds. That not only makes it the fifth fastest car for C&D in 2018 but it’s the fastest sedan they’ve ever tested and the only sedan on the list.
What’s crazy is that the BMW M5 is only fifth due to a tiebreaker. The car in fourth place, the Ferrari 812 Superfast, actually ties the M5 to 60 mph. That’s right, a four-door luxury sedan is as fast as a 789 hp V12-powered Italian thoroughbred. What puts the Ferrari ahead of the BMW M5 is its quarter-mile time that’s four tenths faster than the Bavarian’s.
If you’re wondering, the other three cars that are faster than both the BMW and Ferrari are the McLaren 720S, Porsche 911 GT2 RS and the Lamborghini Huracan Performante. So if you want a car faster than the BMW M5, you really do have to look at much higher-priced exotics. Obviously, there are a few other cars on the market that are faster but these are just the fastest ones C&D tested this past year. Still, it puts the BMW M5 in some seriously impressive performance company. So if you’re looking for a performance machine, why not just get the BMW M5 and carry five adults with you while you’re embarrassing supercars?
