People have been complaining about BMW not entering the supercar niche for quite some time now. Developing a supercar is extremely costly and considering everyone’s buying SUVs and electric cars these days, it might not be a sound investment. However, sometimes, blessings do come in disguise and the BMW M8 Competition might just be what you’ve been waiting for, at least if we take a look at how fast this M Coupe goes in a straight line.
BMW said the new M8 Competition Coupe will do 0-100 km/h (62 mph) in 3.2 seconds, thus turning the GT into BMW’s fastest car ever made. It stole that crown from the M5 Competition but the difference is so small, you might blink and miss it, pun very much intended. With such an impressive 0-62 mph sprint, I wondered just what kind of supercars does the new M8 beat and put together this short list.
5. Lamborghini Huracan LP580-2
The Italian thoroughbred is slower than the M8 and is definitely worthy of the supercar title. If you pay attention to the name, you’ll notice I’m talking about the rear-wheel drive version of the Huracan, not the LP610-4, which is all-wheel drive and faster than its 2WD brother to 100 km/h by 0.2 seconds, and on par with the M8 at 3.2 seconds.
2-3-4. Audi R8 V10, Ferrari 458 Italia and Pagani Zonda Tricolore.
All of these three supercars clocked at 3.4 seconds, and considering how exotic a coupe of them are, it’s quite impressive for the M8 to be placed in that category.
1. 991.1 Porsche 911 GT3 RS
My list also includes the Pagani Zonda Tricolore, the rare bird doing the benchmark sprint in a similar 3.4 seconds. Last, but not least, I have to mention the 991.1 Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Clocked at 3.3 seconds, the Porsche would apparently be slower than the M8 in a straight line. What you should keep in mind though, is that the M8 Coupe is faster than these cars in a straight line and up to 100 km/h (62 mph). On the track, the hefty weight of the M car would work against it and I doubt it would be able to keep up. Even so, what BMW achieved here is pretty damn impressive.
