Today, at Dingolfing plant in Germany, BMW rolled off the the eight millionth BMW. The 520d was delivered on site at the Piepenbrock Group of Companies, one of whose fleet had about 100 vehicles of the brand.
The history of Dingolfing Werk starts in the fifties at then called Goggomobile plant. In 1967, BMW AG took over the company and erected a completely new automobile factory in its place three years later. In 1973, the plant began producing BMW automobiles.
The plant represents BMW’s largest manufacturing facility, over 20,000 employees that work on vehicles like the F10 (5 Series), F11 (5 Series), F07 (5-GT), F12 (6 Series), F13 (6 Series) and F01 (7 Series), and also frames for Rolls-Royce Phantom and Ghost models.
There are more than 1,400 vehicles producing daily in Dingolfing, and about two-thirds are the new BMW 5 Series.
With 79,152 units sold in the first quarter of 2011, the BMW 5 Series is the world leader in the premium segment of the upper middle class.
In 1998 and 1999, the Dingolfing plant was named the best car factory in the world, respectively in Europe.
