For the last couple of years we have reported on BMW’s plans to introduce two new families: BMW 2 Series and 4 Series. As we mentioned before, the 2 Series and 4 Series families will comprise of the coupe and convertible models (other variants are planned as well) therefore allowing BMW to sell them at a higher price.

Just last month BMW has unveiled the 4 Series Coupe Concept which officially confirmed the new designation for the former 3 Series Coupe and Convertible models. But up to this point, the 2 Series moniker was never confirmed by the company through the regular channels.

In a memo sent to BMW dealerships for the first time the company makes reference of future 2 Series and 4 Series models. While this of course doesn’t necessarily put the official stamp on it,  it’s the most official reference we have seen so far.

Built on the F2x platform, the new 1 Series Coupe will move up in class and be sold under the 2 Series badge. The car will share some design cues with the 1 Series Hatchback (especially inside), but overall, the 2 Series Coupe and Convertible are expected to look and feel sportier than the hatchback.

The F22 2 Series Coupe feature redesigned headlights (when compared to the 1 Series Hatchback) with a sleeker and sportier look. The heavy camouflage around the kidney grille is not revealing whether the headlights flow into the grille as seen on the new F30 3 Series. The rear lights will also be quite different than the 1 Series variants.

The Coupe will begin production in Fall 2013.
